Everyone knew it needed to happen.

No one stepped up.

Until Diana Matheson decided she would.

It was inspiring to join a sold-out crowd to see The PITCH — the new documentary about how Canada finally got its first women’s professional soccer league.

We all knew that Canada had world-class players, Olympic medals, and a country that loves the game. But somehow we accepted that there was no professional league for women.

Canada and Haiti were the only top-ranked nations in the world without a domestic women’s league. Our players had to leave home — playing for clubs overseas or in the States, far from family, community, and opportunities for Canadian sponsorships and support.

After retiring, Diana decided to stop waiting for “someone else.”
With Christine Sinclair by her side and filmmaker Michèle Hozer capturing it all, The PITCH shows what it took to build something so big, without a blueprint — and why it matters.

It was so heartfelt to hear Diana and Christine talk about leaving the game better than they found it — about doing this for the next generation, so the girls growing up today will have opportunities they never had.

They created what they — and millions of fans — wanted to see in Canada.

And now, it’s here.

The Northern Super League playoffs start Saturday.

  • ⚽️ Nov 1 & 9 — Roses de Montréal vs AFC Toronto
  • ⚽️ Nov 4 & 8 — Vancouver Rise FC vs Ottawa Rapid FC
  • 🏆 The top two face off on Nov 15 at BMO Field in Toronto for the Matheson Cup!

Julie, Jill, and dozens of SHE’S GOT NEXTers will be there cheering on this historic first. We hope you join us.

Show the women who worked so hard to create this league that the fight is worth it. Women’s sports are worth it.
And show up — with them, and with our community — for the future they’re building.
It’s the one we’ve all been waiting for.
